An original Civil War letter including the cover dated Warwick May 7th 1865. The cover has the send to address of Lieutenant Arlon Atherton of the 3d Regt. N.H. Vols at Wilmington North Carolina.  In one area the writer says: "Nellie and I went to Athol on Thurs., she had two teeth filled and I had one and two of the roots to the tooth which Dr. Hill broke off, taken out. The Dentist did not want to try to take out what he supposed was a third root, as he was not certain whether it was the root or the bone. He said he did not believe I would ever trouble me but if it did to come to him and he would get it out but he should not want to try to get out without I took either. He said it was the worst case of breaking off a tooth he ever saw, it was broken off clear above the gum. It was an upper back tooth. I did not feel much like riding homer ten miles after he got through operating on the teeth, I can tell you......I went to one though on Friday evening at Julia Greens, I did not enjoy that as much as a great many parties I have been to; they had dancing and most of the young people joined in that and I never participate in dancing I did not enjoy sitting still looking on.". 

 

The letter has wear and stain marks, the cover has wear.
