1814 WESTERWALD STEIN STAG PATTERN AS IS. Westerwald stoneware beer stein, 5 3/4" to lip, 8 1/4 to top of thumb rest. Gray stoneware with incised pattern of stag filled in with blue, blue dots around base and rim. The pewter lid is incised No. 18/Meise/1814. On the inside of the lid are three stamps, a cow, and (I think) a horse and a dog. These are small, less than a 3/8" square, and well worn. It appears that the stein was struck or dropped on its top at one time. The thumb rest is bent and dented, with a crack in the lid on the inside where the rest is attached. Below the thumb rest, in the stein itself, a crack extends from the rim alongside the handle to the base. The rest may have been reattached/repaired as an area is lighter is color. If you want one of these for display, the price is right.
