This listing is for a small gemstone, which was hand-carved by a craftsman in Ancient Greece to be used as in Intaglio Seal. In the days before paper and ink were widely available, people would often wear a piece of jewelry with a unique emblem cut into the stone, which could then be stamped into wax or clay as a type of signature. A stamped seal would be used for business agreements, personal correspondence, and other forms of communication or documentation. The small size of this piece means it was likely set in a woman's ring. This particular gemstone measures approximately 10 mm across. It's a green-colored gemstone - likely agate or jasper. The image carved into it is that of a Cetus. In Greek Mythology, Cetea were said to be colossal sea monsters, each the size of a ship. In the ancient tales, Queen Cassiopeia boasted that she and her daughter Andromeda were more beautiful than the Nērēides. This invoked the wrath of Poseidon, who sent a Cetus to attack Æthiopia. Upon consulting an oracle, King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia were told to sacrifice Andromeda to it. They had Andromeda chained to a rock near the ocean so that the Cetus could devour her. After finding Andromeda chained to the rock and learning of her plight, Perseus managed to slay the Cetus when the creature emerged from the ocean. According to one version, Perseus slew Cetus with the harpe lent to him by Hermes. In this intaglio, the Cetus appears to be pierced by a weapon. This could be the harpe of Perseus. This piece was obtained in an auction by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles - one of the most trusted authenticators/auctioneers in the world.
