This is a very fine example of a miniature carved bovid bone figural umbrella that actually functions as a needle case. These novelty sewing items were very popular in Victorian times. Often used as advertisement or as souvenir items. This one has a red stained parasol and a Stanhope viewer in the handle. The Stanhope is of the Southend Pier Essex. It is in good condition. Where the umbrella meets the handle is where it unscrews to reveal a hollowed compartment for needles. This case was made in the late nineteenth century about 1890. Probably made in England. Overall excellent condition for age and normal uses.
