The 2016 American Buffalo 1oz .999 Silver Medallion by SilverTowne features a rendition of James Earle Fraser's acclaimed "Buffalo Nickel" design of an American Indian in profile on the obverse and an American buffalo on the reverse. Fraser was born in Winona, Minnesota and was exposed to frontier life, giving him memories that he expresses in many of his works. Among those works which were influenced by his experiences on the frontier is the Indian Head (Buffalo) nickel. The Buffalo nickel was a copper-nickel five-cent piece that was struck by the United States Mint from 1913-1938. President Taft's administration officials had decided to replace the earlier version of the nickel and were impressed by Fraser's designs showing a Native American and an American bison. The first coins distributed were given out during the groundbreaking ceremonies for the National American Indian Memorial at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York on February 22, 1913.

This exquisite .999 fine Silver round commemorates the Buffalo Nickel design (1913-1938) for Silver bullion investment and is not a US minted coin.
