The beaded strip may be older than the blanket and a favorite strip could be transferred and sewn on to new blankets as old blankets became worn. Sioux Beaded Blanket Strip on hide sewn on to a Blue Stroud Trade Cloth Shoulder Blanket. The Stroud was used by the Northern Plains tribes starting in the Early Reservation period around 1880. Unable to follow the animal herds and forced by US government policy to settle at a single location, the Sioux and other tribes relied on trade cloth and manufactured blankets from the new trading posts to substitute for the hide available through hunting in pre-reservation period. The wide beaded strips generally indicate an 1890s or earlier period beaded strip and the narrower ones typically came later. The beaded strip is on hide and may have been attached to an earlier animal hide blanket and then transferred to the Stroud when the hide wore out, or just to have a softer and lighter blanket. Both men and women would have worn these as shoulder blankets; those with such beadwork to display were individuals of status within the tribe Condition: Excellent overall conditionProvenance: From a private estate collection.
