(Please see all of the photos above.)H. H. Warner made his first million in Rochester, NY in the Safe business. But beginning in 1878, he made even more millions selling patent medicines. He used "safe" in his advertising as a play on words. And he also used a safe in his advertising and on the medicine bottles. He very financially successful at claiming to cure kidney and liver disease (Bright’s disease,) jaundice, lame back, impotency, dropsy, liver inflammation, “female complaints,” debility, and many more, including malaria! With passage of the 1906 Food and Drug Act, Warner’s company was required to replace “Cure” with “Remedy.” The AMA noted that the Safe Kidney and Liver Cure contained herbal extracts, alcohol, glycerin, and potassium nitrate. The medical authorities observed that "alcohol should be avoided in the case of kidney inflammations and that potassium was actually a kidney irritant!" Not only would Warner’s Safe Remedy “not cure Bright’s disease but it may hasten the death of the sufferer who takes it.” Maybe that is what the little girl is whispering to her mother. To own this scrap and trade card for this miracle of modern medicine, all you have to do is bid on this Auction.Delightful and unique, the "ca. 1887 Chromolithograph Scrap and Trade Card for Warner's "Safe" Cures - Quack Patent Medicine" is a wonderful example Chromolithography of the time, and would be a fantastic addition to any Victorian era collection!!!======================Please check out other interesting Trade Cards and advertising material offered this week and in coming weeks by this seller on eBay.
