Seller: essexriverantiques (1,284) 100%, Location: Essex, Massachusetts, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 143433770911 Presented is a fantastic quality English silver plate tea caddy, dating to the 1850s-1870s. This piece was made by Mappin & Webb, one of the most well-known names in Sheffield silver plate. The caddy is made in an oval form, with a hinged lid and attached underplate. The body is beautifully hand chased with lush foliate decoration, surrounding an oval cartouche on both the front and the back. Neither cartouche has ever been engraved with any monogram or crest. The attached underplate stands on handsome scrolled acanthus feet, and has a bold beaded edge. The focal point of the piece is a very striking finial in the form of a crouching sphinx, superbly cast and detailed. Really a fabulous piece, full of fine classical detail. This piece is in great overall condition. There is just a hint of a waver to the rim along one edge, which is quite hard to notice. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The piece is stamped with a maker's mark of M&W for Mappin & Webb, as well as “W16” The tea caddy measures about 7 ½ by 6 by 7 inches, LxWxH. -jm Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution Age: 1850-1899, Type: Tea Caddy, Maker: Mappin & Webb, Composition: Silverplate
