Seller: archaeus91 (244) 100%, Location: Staten Island, New York, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 253293430392 3 by 2 inch fragment of an ancient Ptolemaic Egyptian document. Written in demotic Egyptian (used between 600 bc and 100 ad). The style of this particular fragment looks like demotic Egyptian document in the University of Pennsylvania from 200 bce. 7 LINES OF TEXT WHICH COVER THE WHOLE RECTO SIDE OF THE DOCUMENT. Demotic Egyptian was the cursive of Ptolemaic Egypt used in day to day affairs especially early on while the nobility (including Cleopatra VII ) used Greek. Those who want the older papyri should search for demotic and hieratic because the Greek ones are usually from the Christian era. These fragments were used as scrap to cover the mummies' coffin and were thus preserved. The 'reedy' nature of papyrus is especially evident in this piece. Purchased at auction in Brooklyn NY in August 2017. Material: Paper
