BUY IT NOW - a very large an rare Wooden version of an Inca Royal Canopa, found in Peru. Using wood was MUCH rarer than the usual stone materials most Canopa's were crafted from, probably in the 2% range. It measures 5 1/2 inches long and 4 1/4 inches tall, which is also in the top 1-2% range. This amazingly well preserved, hand carved artifact still contains some of the "offerings" in the hollowed out cavity, and is one of the nicest I've ever handled. A fantastic example!
These vessels were important effigies for those living in the powerful Inca Empire. Typically depicting llamas or alpacas, canopas were often buried in the pasture to protect the herds and increase their fertility, as well as to help improve the quality of the crops. The cavity on the back of each vessel would have been filled with offerings like coca leaves, maize, or animal fat in order to appease the gods. Dates to the Inca Empire, 1200 to 1532AD.
