An enigmatic hollow mold-made ceramic head of a goddess, depicted here with dramatically-styled braided hair that hangs around her face and covers her forehead. A large conical headdress rises from the top of her head and envelops her hair. The figure is mask-like, with wide, openwork eyes and the "Archaic smile", which has been taken by art historians to mean that the subject is intended to appear alive and peaceful. The Archaic period saw a marked change in Greek art, from abstract, geometric forms to a naturalistic style influenced by Egypt and the Near East, here on full display. This votive statue may have been placed in a small household altar, or given as an offering at a temple dedicated to the goddess, or made to be placed in a grave, where female figures are commonly found.
