The resin is a clear, pale yellow, low-viscosity liquid epoxy resin that cures to a hard, solid plastic with superior physical properties. Formulated for use with WEST SYSTEM hardeners, it can be cured in a wide temperature range to form a high-strength solid with excellent moisture resistance. 105 Epoxy Resin is formulated without volatile solvents and does not shrink after curing. It has a relatively high flash point and no strong solvent odor, making it safer to work with than polyester or vinylester resins. Resin viscosity is approximately 1000 centipoise (cP) at 72 F (22C). 105 Epoxy Resin is designed specifically to wet out and bond with wood fiber, fiberglass, reinforcing fabrics and a variety of metals when mixed at the proper ratio with a WEST SYSTEM Epoxy hardener. An excellent adhesive, 105 epoxy mixtures will bridge gaps and fill voids when modified with WEST SYSTEM fillers and can be sanded and shaped when cured. With roller applications, it has excellent thin-film characteristics to flow out and self-level without “fisheyeing.” 105 Epoxy Resin/207 Special Clear Hardener mixtures cure clear so you can achieve a natural finish when coating with varnish. Formulated without volatile solvents, 105 Epoxy Resin does not shrink after curing. It has a relatively high flash point and no strong solvent odor, making it safer to work with than polyester or vinylester resins. Pair 105 Epoxy with corresponding letter size of 205 Fast Hardener, 206 Slow Hardener, 209 Extra Slow Hardener or 207 Special Clear Hardener. Create Superior Moisture Barrier With roller applications, 105 Epoxy Resin has excellent thin film characteristics, allowing it to flow out and self-level without “fish-eyeing.” Multiple coats of a 105 epoxy create a superior moisture barrier and a tough, stable base for paints and varnishes. Epoxy’s Cure Stages Mixing 105 Epoxy Resin with a hardener begins a chemical reaction that transforms the combined liquid ingredients to a solid. This period of transformation is the cure time. As it cures, epoxy passes from the liquid state, through a gel state, before it reaches a solid state. Group Sizes WEST SYSTEM Epoxy resin and hardeners are packaged in four “Group Sizes.” For each container size of epoxy resin, there is a corresponding sized container of epoxy hardener. When purchasing resin and hardener, be sure both containers are labeled with the same Group Size letter (A, B, C or E). West System Epoxy Based on 105 Epoxy Resin, West System Epoxy is a versatile low-viscosity epoxy system. It is used for boat building, composite construction and repairs that require high-strength, waterproof coating, bonding, and filling. It readily wets out fabrics and porous materials, and is easily modified for a wide range of working conditions and applications. West System Epoxy is the world’s most reliable and widely used marine epoxy. It also provides adequate working time at higher shop temperatures. When combined with 105 Resin in a five-part epoxy resin to one-part hardener ratio, the cured resin/206 Slow Hardener mixture yields a rigid, high-strength, moisture-resistant solid with excellent bonding and barrier coating properties. 206 Slow Hardener is not intended for clear coating. It will wet out and bond to wood fiber, fiberglass, reinforcing fabrics, foam and other composite materials, and a variety of metals. 105/206 Epoxy can be thickened with WEST SYSTEM fillers to bridge gaps and fill voids and can be sanded and shaped when cured. With roller applications, it has excellent thin-film characteristics, allowing it to flow out and self-level without “fish-eyeing.” Multiple coats of 105/206 Epoxy create a superior moisture barrier and a tough, stable base for paints and varnishes. It is formulated without volatile solvents resulting in a very low VOC content. It has a relatively high flash point, no strong solvent odor and does not shrink after curing. It is not intended for clear coating natural finished wood. No Need for Excessive Clamping Force Unlike traditional wood glues, WEST SYSTEM 105 Resin-based epoxy mixtures including 105 Resin and 206 Slow Hardener are stronger than wood or many other substrates. Because of this, it is beneficial to have some epoxy between the objects you are gluing together. As long as the parts are held in place and epoxy is contacting the entire surface of both substrates, no clamping pressure is needed. With epoxy, the goal clamping is to simply ensure the epoxy contacts the entire surface for the duration of the cure time. Moderating clamp force is all that is required. If an epoxy filler is not used and a high clamping force is used, the result can be a glue-starved joint which will make bond failure much more likely. Glue starved joints are weaker than their counterparts. Avoid glue-starved joints by following the one- or two-step bonding method. Group Sizes WEST SYSTEM Epoxy resin and hardeners are packaged in three “Group Sizes." For each container size of resin, there is a corresponding sized container of hardener. When purchasing resin and hardener, be sure both containers are labeled with the same Group Size letter (A, B or C). Hardener Selection Controls Cure Time An epoxy’s open time and overall cure time govern much of the activity of building and repairing with epoxy, and hardener selection is crucial to determining open time and cure time. Open time dictates the number of minutes available for mixing, application, smoothing, shaping, assembly, and clamping. Epoxy cure time dictates how long you must wait before removing clamps, or before you can sand or go on to the next step in your project. Hardener Cure Speed Each WEST SYSTEM Epoxy hardener has an ideal temperature cure range. At any given temperature, each epoxy resin/hardener combination will go through the same cure stages but at different rates of speed. Base your hardener selection on the amount of working time you’ll need for the job you’ll be doing at the temperature conditions you’ll be working under. The 300 Mini Pump Set Contains one resin pump and two hardener pumps. Pumps mount directly on the resin and hardener containers and eliminate the mess involved with measuring by weight or volume. 300 Mini Pumps are calibrated to deliver the proper working ratio with one full pump stroke of resin for each one full pump stroke of hardener. 105/205-206 pumps deliver approximately 0.8 fl oz of resin/hardener with one full stroke of each pump. 105/207-209 pumps deliver approximately 0.9 fl oz of resin/hardener with one full stroke of each pump. Made of durable polypropylene, the Mini Pumps give years of dependable service. Read and follow the priming, ratio verification and operating instructions that come with the pumps. As packaged, the pumps are ready to install on the Group Size B containers. A package of extension tubes for Group Size A containers is included with the set. Group Size C extension tubes are included in the 105-C Resin and in the 207-SC or 209-SC packages. Accurate Metering WEST SYSTEM Epoxy Metering Pumps are calibrated for accurate metering of WEST SYSTEM Epoxy Resin and Hardener at the proper mix ratio, while eliminating mess and guesswork. The correct epoxy resin to hardener ratio is important to ensure that the epoxy reaches its full potential for cured physical properties. Ratio Verification The ratio of each pair of Mini Pumps is controlled by the installation of a clip, that limits the stroke (and volume) of one or both of the pumps. All Mini Pumps are carefully inspected during this operation and during packaging. But the final test of a pump’s performance can’t be made until it is actually pumping resin or hardener. The ratio verification test described in the instructions confirms that both pumps are dispensing the correct volume and that the ratio of resin to hardener is within a critical narrow range. Why Use Epoxy Metering Pumps? Epoxy metering pumps ensure you’re using the correct ratio of resin to hardener, crucial to epoxy performance. Depending on the hardener you select, WEST SYSTEM Epoxy is mixed at a ratio of five parts resin to one part hardener, or three parts resin to one part hardener. At the proper mix ratio, the number of chemically reactive sites in the resin balances the number of reactive sites in the hardener. The resin molecules are larger than the hardener molecules, and have few reactive sites, hence the 5:1 or 3:1 ratio. When the mix is stirred thoroughly, the resin and hardener molecules react to develop full strength. If the mix contains excess hardener, hardener molecules will remain unreacted in the cured epoxy, weakening it. They can also prevent subsequent paint coatings from setting up. NOTE: Never add extra hardener in attempt to alter cure speed. This will only throw the resin-to-hardener ratio off, preventing the epoxy from reaching its full potential, and possibly even keeping it from hardening. Many people epoxy in small batches, mixing several ounces at once. The most popular epoxy metering pumps are 300 Mini Pumps. They get the job done 95% of the time. Epoxy Metering Pumps for Fast Dispensing WEST SYSTEM Positive Displacement Pumps dispense epoxy faster than any pump they’ve ever offered. Positive Displacement Pumps work by trapping a fixed amount of resin and hardener then forcing (displacing) that trapped volume into the discharge pipe. This offers improved epoxy pumping performance because changes in viscosity due to temperature change do not affect their performance.
