This auction is for a beautiful old Chinese jade carving in the form of a bi disc.  The bi disc is a traditional round form with a round hole in the center.  There are carvings on both sides of a bat, peach tree, fish, several ruyi and a house.  There is a carved border around the center hole and the outer edge.  The color is white with some emerald green and darker green.  An old square Chinese wood stand on traditional legs is included in the auction to display the jade carving. Many Chinese carvings being sold as jade or jadite are actually hard stones.  So this is an opportunity to buy a lovely, old genuine jade carving of a bi disc.  Jade bi discs are highly prized by collectors. Carved discs, pendants, charms and amulets have been unearthed in Chinese tombs that date back at least 3000 years.  The exact original use is not documented.  It is believed the objects were used as amulets or charms to ward off evil and bring good fortune to the owner.  They were sometimes worn as pendants or on clothing in later times. The carving of this lovely JADE bi disc required great skill and time by a Chinese artisan.  The vintage carving is in excellent condition with normal wear as expected from use.  There may be a small crack or chip along the edge of the bi disc but it might be a natural feature in the jade.  This can be seen in the photos.  There might be minor surface scratches from being an antique.  There is no other damage to the bi disc.  The vintage stand has surface scratches and minor bits of paint loss but there are no chips, cracks or repairs.
