Rare - 1840's Charriere Tonsillotome
This instrument has a cross-hatched & turned, ebony handle, a gun-blued steel part and some German Silver.
This is an early guillotine type tonsillotome. It is placed in the mouth with the enlarged tonsil fitting through
the metal oval ring. The top lever is pushed forward and impales the tonsil and lifts it slightly. The black
handle is retracted and the tonsil is dissected.
Instruments of this type are increasingly hard to find in this condition. The instrument is missing a screw
that fits through the middle, brass pivot. It has been replaced with a piece of metal that allows it to function
as intended.
Later guillotine tonsillotomes can be operated with one hand. This requires both hands - one to
operate the top forks (push forward) and another to pull the black handle.
This is an AMAZING piece for a serious collector!!!!
