One of Henry Ford's best buddies (Thomas Edison was another), Harvey S. Firestone started off making solid tires for steam fire trucks in his Akron, Ohio, factory. Firestone under-priced his other three home town competitors, Goodyear, General Tire, and B.F. Goodrich, and became the supplier of choice for Ford's Model T. With the success of that car, Firestone and Goodyear combined became the largest tire manufacturers in North America until the 1970s. The first Canadian factory in Hamilton began producing tires in 1922, To capitalize on his Model T success, Firestone began selling tires as “Gum-Dipped" after World War I, claiming that they offered “the most miles per dollar.” They even said that their Gum-Dipped tires could save your life, and they did work well. Firestone rolled in the cash until 1946, when Michelin developed their radial tire design that was even more durable and economical. It took a long time and lot of resistance from Firestone and his American ilk to keep the radial out of the US, but it is now the standard. This ashtray is created in that heritage. It has a perfect glass insert without chip, crack, or ding. Made of hard rubber, it measures six inches (16 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48 cm) outside circumstance. The glass ashtray is one-inch (3 cm) deep. Perfect for that 1950s garage or soda shop, a country store, or as a candy dish for your grandchildren (you can tell them about ol' Harvey and Henry).
