This is a fantastic and bold Vintage Modern Pop Art Science Fiction Lithograph Poster on paper for The Other Side of the Sun (1969), which was designed by graphic artist Jan Mlodzeniec (1929 - 2000) in 1974 for the Polish release of the film. This movie was directed by Robert Parrish and produced in the United Kingdom. This artwork reveals the portrait of a buxom purple-haired woman surrounded by a pink bubble, and below her is an astronaut, staring directly at the viewer and holding some sort of futuristic contraption. In bold yellow, the poster's Polish title reads: "Po Drugiej Stronie Slonca ." Additionally, this piece is signed in plate: " Jan Mlodzeniec" at the lower right edge.  The magenta hues, and bright, bold colors of this artwork really pop off of the wall when viewing this artwork. Approximately 23 1/8 x 32 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual poster is approximately 23 x 32 1/8 inches. Good condition for age, with some light scuffing, faint creasing, and edge wear throughout (please see photos.) Additionally, the glass in the frame is about 1/4 of an inch too short, exposing just the very top edge which is not covered by the glass. Vintage Polish posters such as these were commissioned by the Communist State to promote cultural events. These types of posters were printed in strictly limited runs to be displayed in town centers, theatres and cinemas. The pieces which survive are very rare, especially in this condition. This very cool Pop Art poster is priced to sell. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! About the Artist: Jan Mlodozeniec Born :  1929 - Warsaw
Died :   2000 - Warsaw Known for :  Painting, folk art
Biography from Dom Aukcyjny Ostoya
Jan Mlodozeniec was born in 1929 in Warsaw. He studied in the years 1948-55 in the Department of Graphics and Poster, conducted by Henry-ka Tomaszewski at ASP in Warsaw. From 1953 he was bound from Film Rental Center, whose patronage has chosen to continue years of social realism by the conscious Koryfeusz of the "Polish School of the Poster". Similar to other poster designers in the district, he used iconographic and stylistic elements in all his works inadmissible in official terms (deformation, metaphorical short not always "decent" exchange, pessymism, etc.). In the following years he became an artist who developed his own recognizable style of poster, based on the use of the lynx, the use of the expressions with a rough contour of elements and long contrasting beaches colors, which brought his work closer to the folk art.

Biography from Desa Unicum
He studied in the years 1948-55 at the Department of Graphics and Poster, run by Henryk Tomaszewski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. From 1953, he was associated with Centrala Wynajmu FilmĂłw, whose patronage allowed the future leaders of the "Polish poster school" to survive the worst years of socialist realism. Mlodozeniec, like other poster designers of that period, smuggled into his works iconographic elements and stylistic features that were unacceptable in official art (deformation, metaphorical abbreviation with not always the "correct" meaning, pessimism, etc.). In the following years, the artist developed his own, widely recognizable poster style, based on simplified drawings, the use of clearly distinguished shapes with thick outlines and large surfaces of contrasting colors, which brought his works closer to folk art. Jan MĹ‚odoĹĽeniec   (8 November 1929 - 12 December 2000) was a Polish graphic designer. He worked in posters, drawing, book and publication design, and illustration.

Born in  Warsaw , he studied from 1948 to 1955 at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts   in the Department of Graphic Arts and Posters of  Henryk Tomaszewski .

He was a member of  Alliance Graphique International   (AGI).

Jan Mlodozeniec

Jan Mlodozeniec was one of the most outstanding artists from 20th century Poland. He was born in Warsaw on November 8th 1929 to a well-to-do peasant family. They were all creative; his dad Stanislaw was a poet and founder of Polish futurism, his mum Wanda was an artist and his own son Piotr is now an accomplished graphic artist.

Jan Mlodozeniec decided to apply to art school on a bit of a whim after serving in the army during the war. He studied under the great master Prof. Henryk Tomaszewski and became one of the most prominent members of the Polish School of Posters.

Mlodozeniec’s painterly style is very distinct; characterised by naive childlike forms, bold lines, strong colour and a sense of humour. He said “I like colour in itself. I see its meaning in the colourful existence against the backdrop of a grey street. I never think twice about using six colours, something that from the point of view of poster canons (sparing means of expression) lowers its value in the eyes of experts”.

All of Mlodozeniec’s letters are painted by hand. He masterfully integrates the typography with the illustrative elements so that they intertwine with each other and work together as one.

Jan Mlodozeniec was very meticulous when designing his posters. He would often create hundreds of iterations for one piece - all in real scale on cardboard (until that became too expensive), and with just tiny changes in each version.

Jan Mlodozeniec was warm, joyful and generous. These qualities shine through in his work and it’s one of the reasons we love him so much.

Over his lifetime he created more than 400 Polish posters; including a wonderful selection of opera posters, theatre posters, film posters, a series of posters for folk shop Cepelia and Polish tourist poster. Alongside this work, he produced numerous book covers, illustrations, and drawings.

Mlodozeniec won many awards for his posters which were exhibited in over 40 solo shows around the world. Jan Mlodozeniec posters are now held in private collections and iconic museums including The Stedeliijk in Amsterdam, Kunstblibliothek in Berlin and the Museum of Modern Art in Toyama.
