Seller: smallpleasuresfarm (3,888) 100%, Location: Berryville, Arkansas, Ships to: US, Item: 162625299053 Maker: unknown, Type: loving cup, Age: Pre-1800, Primary Material: Ceramic & Porcelain, Original/Reproduction: Original, Style: Georgian, Country/Region of Origin: England, Color: Multi-Color, Details: We are listing this very rarely seen hand painted late 1700s Georgian Prattware two handled mug or loving cup. Prattware was named for William Pratt, who paradoxically actually had little to do with the introduction of this style of pottery. It was originally developed in an attempt to find colors derived from metallic oxides that that could be applied before glazing and withstand the extreme heat of the firing process in the kilns. This led to a palette of rather subtle colors, such as the one on this piece. You can see a very similarly decorated and colored 1780s Prattware jug on page 119 of An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs. Almost all Prattware is unmarked, which is true of both the jug and this loving cup. Many of the later Prattware pieces (which are mostly what you see now) were more brightly colored rather crudely done jugs displaying almost cartoon character figures, but early Prattware pieces are very elegant in their simplicity and muted color scheme. This piece is over 5 inches tall, 7 inches at its widest point, displays rather well, and it is in good overall condition. There is an obvious flake off the base, a few smaller flakes off the rim, some residue inside the cup, and some very thin hairlines and crackling at various points on the outside, but it is still a charming piece. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is a very rarely seen early piece of Georgian Prattware and a very decorative (if somewhat rustic) design piece as well.
