DESCRIPTIONFabulous early Thai pottery. Sawankhalok covered lidded jar from the northern part of the Sukhothai province. Probably from the Si Satchanalia kilns. Smooth squash-form body covered in cobalt blue / gray leaf and vine decorations, between several rings of matching cobalt. Matching lid centered around a raised pointed finial. Unglazed base. Light gray ceramic color beneath the glaze. Slightly raised rings on the lid, and slightly lobed structure on the body. The Sukothai province traded these precious ceramics with its neighbors. The transport was often by ship across the oceans. A number of Si Satchanalai ceramics in excellent condition have been excavated in ship wrecks in the Gulf of Thailand, the Andaman Sea and other waters.CONDITIONOverall excellent. No chips, dings or cracks. One old white branch-like stain that penetrates through to the interior. May be a flaw in the original construction or a possible early repair (visible in the images) A FINE AND RARE PIECE OF SOUTHEASTERN ASIAN POTTERY. All items shipped USPS priority mail.
