Very Rare 18th C. Painted Double Lidded Wooden Amish Carrying Box, C. 1780, NR

 A very rare & unusual late 18th century large double lidded carrying box, C. 1780-1800. This exceptional early piece is constructed with hand cut dovetails on the sides & the bottom board is held in place with wooden pegs. The half moon shaped handle is extremely well carved. It is held in place with large rosehead nails, large wooden pegs secure the hinged lids on either side. Each lid is chamfered on all three edges, both open & close easily, though one sits slightly up when closed. This wonderful early box retains its original berry red paint in excellent condition with just minor wear. Recently found in the attic of an estate in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Possibly Amish in origin, the form suggests a lunchbox or picnic box, a very unusual piece. This early carrying box measures 17" long, 9 1/2" wide, 9 1/2" tall & 14 3/4" tall including the handle. The surface is untouched, just lightly dusted. It is in excellent condition, with normal wear & some very old bug damage on the inside. A very rare & unusual piece of Americana, offered with no reserve!!
