What exactly is EMV?
EMV stands for Europay/MasterCard/Visa.
The three companies joined together to form EMVco (then Amex and JCB joined later).
EMVCo's purpose is to promote the migration from the magnetic stripe to the chip based smart card.
A “Smart Card” is a payment card with an embedded microprocessor, or chip.
The main benefit of EMV is reducing card fraud resulting from counterfeit, stolen or lost cards.
Why will I need the ability to process EMV transactions?
The three main benefits are: • Reduce the number of card based fraud and cloning of credit cards • Increase the number of credit card based transaction off-line and online• Multi-application interoperability
In terms of hardware, the ability to process EMV transactions will require you to transition to new terminals and/or PIN pads.
