LOST LEGENDS OF SURF GUITAR 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION 2LP SET Mastered From Rare Vintage Tapes! Pressed On High-Quality 180g Vinyl! Includes Previously Unissued Tracks! It's hard to think of a musical style that's more quintessentially American than surf music. Springing up along the California coast in the early 1960s, the surf sound — characterized by "wet"-sounding guitar reverb that echoed the sound of the sea and pummeling rhythms that emulated the ocean's currents — was originally inspired and nurtured by the culture that surrounded the sport. Despite its provincial origins, the surf genre captured the imagination of teenagers around the world, and spawned a remarkably large body of highly original music, with an emphasis on innovative guitar instrumentals that would influence rock axemen for decades to come. Much of that vintage surf music was originally released on small regional labels, and many of the acts that created some of the greatest surf music never released more than a handful of singles. Those factors resulted in many original surf classics remaining difficult to obtain in recent years. Sundazed Music, a longstanding champion of vintage surf music, went a long way towards remedying that situation with the release of its CD series Lost Legends of Surf Guitar. The series has been widely recognized for rescuing numerous rare, obscure and/or lesser-known gems from surf music's golden age. Now, the landmark series moves into second gear, progressing into the vinyl format with a pair of double-LP collections on 180g vinyl, each of which features 28 below-the-radar vintage surf killers. Lost Legends of Surf Guitar gathers a rousing, roaring assortment of underground surf classics and under-appreciated gems by such notable surf combos as the Challengers, the Pyramids, the Tornadoes, the Catalinas, the Centurions, the Essex, the Jesters, the Rhythm Rockers, the Royal Coachmen, the Tandems and Dave Myers and His Surftones, as well as numbers by both the Surfaris and the Original Surfaris! There's also a rarely-heard track by legendary Minnesota surf-garage kings the Trashmen, the out-there "Devil Surfer" by Scott Engel (who would soon go on to pop stardom and cult acclaim as Scott Walker) and scarce versions of such surf anthems as "Jack the Ripper," "Point Panic" and "Moondawg." This essential collection, meticulously mastered from rare vintage tapes and pressed on high-quality vinyl, is the perfect collection for gremmie and ho-dad alike, so grab this wave and jump head-first into the surf!!! Remastered from the Original Analog Tapes AND LIMITED TO 1000 PIECES WORLDWIDE! The Challengers were one of the first—and one of the best—of the California surf combos. They were also one of the most prolific, turning out a series of ultra-cool LPs that stand with the surf genre’s most beloved recordings. The Challengers, led by drummer/producer Richard Delvy, originally grew out of the breakup of the pioneering surf outfit the Bel Airs, and took their predecessors’ achievements several steps further, creating some of the era’s most powerful surf instrumentals. On this 1965 LP, the Challengers turned their attention to the booming sport of skateboarding, as the titles of such standout tunes as “Asphalt Spinner,” “Skinned Shins” and “Delvy’s Sidewalk Capers” demonstrate. Elsewhere on the album, the band honors its surf roots with board-busting renditions of such surf standards as “Pipeline,” “The Cruel Sea” and “Banzai Washout,” which showcase the Challengers’ imaginative compositions and peerless instrumental chops. After being out of print on vinyl for decades, this killer platter is back, remastered from the original analog tapes, pressed on high-quality high-definition vinyl and packaged in its complete original cover art. Limited to 1000 Copies! Sundazed has given this groundbreaking music the royal treatment: meticulous mastering from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-definition vinyl. Sundazed continues to set and maintain the surf and hot rod reissue standard! The first wave of the surf music explosion spawned countless short-lived bands and one-shot studio projects. Many of those projects were quickly forgotten, but a handful have continued to inspire hushed reverence among surf aficionados. The latter category includes the Catalinas lone album, originally released in 1964 and out of print for more than four decades. An all-star studio super group featuring legendary producer Terry Melcher, future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and fabled Wrecking Crew members Hal Blaine, Jerry Cole, Steve Douglas, Leon Russell, Billy Strange and Tommy Tedesco, the Catalinas lived up to their impressive pedigree. In addition to rarely-heard tunes penned by Bobby Darin and a pre-Byrds Roger McGuinn, the album features potent versions of such surf and hot rod classics as “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Wipe Out,” “Banzai Washout,” “I Get Around” and “Summer Means Fun.” Long a rare collector’s item, Fun Fun Fun is now back in its original vinyl format, remastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-definition vinyl, with complete original cover art. THIS WILL BE THE BEST PRICE YOU WILL EVER SEE A SEALED COPY EVER AGAIN. Any surf fan worth his sea-salt will flip his lid for the reverb to infinity staccato rush of the New Dimensions! Sundazed presents the first-ever collection of the group's mightiest recordings from '63: chock fulla tuff surf 'n' hot rod sounds and lotsa loud guitar racket! Some 42 years later, I still remember National Breakout! I bought Surfin' Bongos in 63 or so and loved it. I partially learned drums from that record. I always wondered if they were a real band, a studio band, or just a project to cash in on the surf craze. It was a very pleasant surprise to find out they were not only a real band, but a bunch of high school kids! I can't speak for their other albums, but for Surfin' Bongos, the album cover was definitely done on the cheap. There was no photo of the band, no mention of the musicians (that I can remember) so it made you wonder where the music came from. I recently found Craig Nuttycombe, their rhythm guitar player and what a nice guy! As far as this best of, it really hits the mark. You can't ask for better surf music. And no, I am not comparing them to the Beach Boys. They are in a different category with the other instrumental greats. They didn't have the production values of some of the other bands, but they capture the all important California surfing spirit. When I listen to the samples, I can smell the salt surf, hear the pounding waves, feel the hot sand on my feet, even see the ice plant on the sand dunes. If you want great instrumental surf music, you can't go wrong with the New Dimensions. Track Listings 1. Failsafe 2. Cat on a Hot Foam Board 3. Bongo Surf 4. National Breakout 5. Soul Breakout 6. Starting off mellow & cool with "Busting Surfboards," FROM PULP FICTION then going into the exotic "Malaguena" (same melody as the Russian folk song "Dark Eyes"), You'd think they'd be worried sick about getting sand in their sax, but you'd be wrong. The carefree Tornadoes didn't give a rat's ass about anything but surfin' and baggin' beavers. And the world became a better place for their callous indifference to fine brass plating. 1. And here's the proof: guitar-wrangler Jerry Cole and His Spacemen's stupidly rare 1964 LP, Surf Age! While most of Cole's albums were cranked out at the astounding pace, Surf Age, his second LP for Capitol Records, was by comparison a production of epic proportions. For the sessions, Cole and his hand-picked all-star crew of LA studio cats labored to create an album unlike any other, an endlessly inventive amalgam of surf and `60s pop. The original liner notes say it most eloquently: "One listen to the music of Jerry Cole and His Spacemen will tell you that theirs is the sound of the SURF AGE! Their beat is as dynamic as tomorrow's crashing waves; their instrumental blend is as fresh and modern as tomorrow night's surfing dance party; their tunes are definitely for swingin' moderns." If ever there was a “band that launched a thousand bands,” it would be the Ventures. Founded in Tacoma, Washington in 1958, their guitar-based instrumental sound would prove hugely influential, inspiring countless followers to pick up a guitar, bass or set of drumsticks and try to emulate their heroes. As these musical neophytes would soon learn, it wasn’t as easy as it initially appeared. The Ventures were masters of tone and technique, deftly arranging their instruments in a seamless approach that was instantly recognizable. Because they were an instrumental group, their songs needed no translation, which resulted in a huge worldwide following. While many rock bands have claimed to be “big in Japan” over the years, the Ventures were the country’s first rock superstars and they maintain a devoted worldwide following to this day. With over 100 million records sold, they are the best-selling instrumental group of all time. Sundazed is proud to rightfully address the magnificent Ventures’ catalog. Each title has been sourced from the original Dolton and Liberty Records’ reels and painstakingly mastered to sound and feel like they were originally intended. Dizzy THE VENTURES WALK DON'T RUN LIMITED EDITION LP WITH FOUR RARE BONUS TRACKSThe Ventures' debut album contains songs like "Raunchy", "My Own True Love (Tara's Theme)", "Night Train", "Sleep Walk" and of course, the title track, the hit "Walk, Don't Run". "This debut album by the Ventures is surprisingly good, considering that it was recorded in a huge rush, during an era when all concerned couldn't help but know that rock & roll albums (apart from those by Elvis Presley) generally didn't sell very well -- indeed, the fact that it is so good speaks volumes about the class and talent of the group at this early point in their history. With a sudden and totally unexpected number two national hit in "Walk, Don't Run" and a burgeoning demand for live performances, the quartet went in and recorded the best 11 tracks they knew to get a long-player together, all done in such a hurry that the members themselves couldn't stay around long enough to be photographed for the cover (those are stand-ins). The result is surprisingly sophisticated in its use of stereo (then still relatively unusual in rock & roll, stereo LPs having only debuted three years earlier, and largely confined to classical recordings), dividing the sound of the band quite neatly on two sides, thus giving LP purchasers a treat that owners of the single "Walk, Don't Run" would miss -- not only the sound separation that was so prized by audiophiles of the era, but crisp presentation of each instrument, dividing the two guitars very neatly. Thus, the casual listener could play with the speaker settings and balances, and the serious fans could get in close on the actual playing. The material is a mix of originals and hits drawn from every category, including earlier rock & roll instrumentals ("Raunchy"), R&B "Night Train," and even film music ("My Own True Love [Tara's Theme]") -- one can just make out the familiar Max Steiner Gone With the Wind motif on the latter, and it is a fairly inventive approach to an old musical chestnut, rebuilding it from the ground up. The material all has a lean jauntiness, most unexpectedly "Night Train," which sounds closer in spirit to Chet Atkins here than to Buddy Morrow or King Curtis. The originals were no filler, either, "The McCoy" being a hot piece of surf guitar showcasing all concerned." - Bruce Eder, allmusic Features: • Limited Edition • WITH FOUR BONUS TRACKS Selections: Side One: 1. And the look of each album befits its sonic superiority! Presented in "old school" Stoughton tip-on jackets, these time honored favorites shine brighter than the originals! Surfin' USA was the Beach Boys' real breakthough album, showing Brian Wilson asserting himself in the studio as both a premier songwriter and arranger on a set of material that was stronger than their Surfin' Safari debut. Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master. The stereo editions of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert were all mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group's supervision. "Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions — evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck's skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own — but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market," says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys' archivist. The Beach Boys' practice of double-tracking their vocals really lends itself to stereo mixes. Split left and right, as they are on a lot of those early stereo versions, those doubled vocal parts can really envelop the listener, surrounding them with Wilsons, Loves and Jardines! All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys. Besides the hit title track on Surfin' USA and its popular drag-racing flip side ("Shut Down"), AllMusic notes that Surfin' USA has a lovely, heartbreaking ballad ("Lonely Sea") and a couple of strong Brian Wilson originals ("The Noble Surfer" and "Farmer's Daughter"). "There are also a surprisingly high quotient of instrumentals (five) that demonstrate that...the Beach Boys could play respectably gutsy surf rock as a self-contained unit. Indeed, the album as a whole is the best they would make, prior to the late '60s, as a band that played most of their instruments, rather than as a vehicle for Brian Wilson's ideas. The LP was a huge hit, vital to launching surf music as a national craze, and one of the few truly strong records to be recorded by a self-contained American rock band prior to the British Invasion." Surfer Girl, the Beach Boys' third album for Capitol Records, was the first produced by Brian Wilson on his own (the previous two, Surfin Safari and Surfin Usa (Mono & Stereo Remasters), were co-produced by the late Capitol A&R man, Nik Venet). This album was The Boys' first really great effort; there's not a bad track in the lot, including the title song, "Catch A Wave," "In My Room," "Hawaii," "Our Car Club," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Your Summer Dream," and more. Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. They aren't merely different, or even just better - they're terrific. ...new colors and dimensions in the music abound. Wilson's grand arrangements are hugely well served by these breakthrough stereo mixes. ...it's hard to deny the feeling that these new mixes are a more accurate portrayal, a fuller realization, of everything Brian Wilson intended this breathtaking music to accomplish." - Robert Baird, Stereophile Magazine March 2016 Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) was released in stereo for the first time in 2012. These stereo mixes were created between 2005 and 2012 using the first generation basic tracking session multitracks, synced with the overdubs that were later added on second and third generation masters, to create the first true stereo mixes. The exception is "Help Me Rhonda," which is a computer-generated stereo mix by Derry Fitzgerald. A remix in stereo for that track isn't possible because many overdubs were added as the song was mixed for the original mono single. The stereo mixes for "Today!," "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)," "Beach Boys' Party!," and "Smiley Smile" were produced and mixed by Mark Linett, and co-produced by Alan Boyd.Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. Ever pressured by commercial concerns, Wilson and the band created what was in essence the true follow-up to the All Summer Long album. Still, there's a level of musical sophistication to tracks such as "Salt Lake City," the Phil Spector tribute "Then I Kissed Her," "Summer Means New Love" and "Let Him Run Wild.Features:• 200g Vinyl• Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, most from the original master tapes or best sources available• Lacquer plating by Gary Salstrom• Pressed at Quality Record Pressings• Stereo• Stereo mixes produced by Mark Linett and Alan Boyd • Mixed by Mark Linett• "Old school" Stoughton tip-on jacketsSelections:Side A:1. And Your Dream Comes True The Beach Boys Surfin' Safari TREMENDOUSLY RARE LIMITED EDITION LP'S (Mono & STEREO DOUBLE LP SET) For the early part of the Beach Boys career, all of their singles were mixed and mastered and released only in the mono format — they didn't release a single in stereo until 1968. In those days, hits were made on AM radio in mono. And the mono of those times worked well for Wilson, who suffers from partial deafness. Still, apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master. Their classic songs epitomize the spirit of the California lifestyle and The Beach Boys have become an American icon to a worldwide audience. The Beach Boys' first hit "Surfin'" (1961) launched a string of chart-topping songs that spans nearly forty years and includes eternal anthems of American youth: "Surfin' USA," "Surfer Girl," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "California Girls," "Help Me Rhonda," "Barbara Ann," "Good Vibrations," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Rock and Roll Music," "Kokomo," and more. Their chart success alone would have earned The Beach Boys their spot in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (they were inducted in 1988), not to mention 32 RIAA Platinum and Gold record awards and worldwide sales estimated at more than 100 million. But The Beach Boys' story is one of not only commercial but also artistic success. Their unique blend of harmonies, musical arrangements and timeless lyrics still place the music of The Beach Boys among the All-Time Favorites of today's music critics. As an example, VH-1 named Pet Sounds as the No. 3 album in the Top 100 Albums in Rock 'n' Roll History, as judged in a poll of musicians, executives and journalists. The Beach Boys were honored at the 2001 Grammy Awards, receiving The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. The Shift - THE TRASHMEN Surfin' BirdHailing from the wintry heartland of Minneapolis, the Trashmen achieved cult immortality with a passel of landlocked surf anthems and reckless garage-rock gems, best exemplified by their immortal anthem "Surfin' Bird," two and a half minutes of inspired, unhinged mayhem that's never been equaled. But "Surfin' Bird" is just the tip of the iceberg of the 1964 album that bears the song's name. The only longplayer that the band released during their original lifespan, Surfin' Bird demonstrates that the Trashmen were no novelty act or one-hit wonder, but a brilliant, original outfit who filtered their R&B and surf influences through their own cheerfully demented sensibility to make some of their era's most reckless, uninhibited rock 'n' roll.In addition to the iconic "Surfin' Bird," the album features the surf-and-drag killers "King of the Surf," "My Woodie" and "Tube City," along with the "Bird"-themed sequels "Bird Bath" and "Bird Dance Beat." Elsewhere on the album, the Trashmen's surf-rock skills animate the instrumental standards "Misirlou," "Malagueña" and "Kuk," and the band delivers storming readings of Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" and Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)." 1. Presented in "old school" Stoughton tip-on jackets, these time honored favorites shine brighter than the originals!Worth noting on Surf's Up is Stephen Desper's engineering work — the entire album was mixed to a center channel quad matrix that he was developing at the time.Surf's Up hit the Top 30 on its first release, reaching No. 29 on the Billboard LP charts — the highest chart placement the group had had since 1967. At the time of its release, Surf's Up was hailed by many as a comeback for The Beach Boys, who were beginning to attract raves for their live performances, including highly acclaimed sets at New York's legendary Carnegie Hall.Carl Wilson makes solid contributions on Surf's Up with "Long Promised Road" and "Feel Flows," and the album also features stellar tracks by Al Jardine and Mike Love, as well as Bruce Johnston's most enduring composition, the gently nostalgic "Disney Girls (1957)," but the album's twin jewels are both from Brian Wilson — "Til I Die" and the title track — one of the centerpieces of the then-unreleased Smile (cowritten by lyricist Van Dyke Parks and here given that album's "Child Is Father to the Man" as a glorious coda.) Surf's Up track "A Day in the Life of a Tree" is the first in a series of Brian's songs that close the album. It's simultaneously one of Brian Wilson's most deeply touching and unusual compositions; he is the narrator and object of the song (though not the vocalist; co-writer Jack Rieley lends a hand), lamenting his long life amid the pollution and grime of a city park while the somber tones of a pipe organ build atmosphere. "Til I Die," isn't the love song the title suggests; it's a haunting, fatalistic piece of pop surrealism that appeared to signal Brian's retirement from active life Features:• 200g Vinyl• Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, most from the original master tapes or best sources available• Lacquer plating by Gary Salstrom• Pressed at Quality Record Pressings• Stereo• Stereo mixes produced by Mark Linett and Alan Boyd • Mixed by Mark Linett• "Old school" Stoughton tip-on jackets• Audio Production - Mark Linett• For Brother Records - Elliott Lott • Gatefold JacketSelections:1. It was the summer of 1974, and the Beach Boys were still trying to get themselves back on track commercially after a seven-year commercial dry spell, when this double LP of their 1963-1966 material (all but one cut predating Pet Sounds) came along and did the job. Sourced from the Original King Mono Masters! Featuring the Hit "Hide Away"! Surfing songs? Err, no. Blazing guitar instrumentals? YES!!! Dig the sounds of blues giant Freddy King on this marvelous mono reissue of one of his most sought-after albums! Syd Nathan, impresario of Cincinatti's King Records, was the epitome of the old-school indie record label owner. Always hustling, Nathan regularly beat the odds to release hit after hit in multiple genres. He'd try anything if he thought it might work, or more precisely, if he thought it would make money. After Chess Records turned down guitarist/vocalist Freddy King several times for sounding too much like B.B, King, Nathan thought that sound might actually be sellable and took a chance, signing Freddy to his Federal subsidiary label. They hit paydirt with an instrumental titled "Hide Away," which reached #5 on the R&B Chart and #29 on the Pop Singles Chart. Encouraged by the single's success, Nathan released a full album of King's instrumentals, Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King. The album sold well and helped make Freddy a bankable touring act. While others would have been satisfied to move on to the next project, Syd sensed untapped potential in the LP. Meanwhile, several artists on the West Coast were making noise in the brand new surf music scene (and by "making noise," I mean selling records). Syd didn't have any surf music artists under contract, but he DID have Freddy King. Surely, Syd surmised, if the kid's went nuts for Dick Dale's guitar instrumental workouts, they could do the same for Freddy's. All he needed was a little marketing magic...GET A NEW COVER WITH SOME SURF KIDS! THROW SOME CROWD NOISE OVER TRACKS SO IT SOUNDS 'LIVE'! CALL IT...ERR...FREDDY KING GOES SURFIN'! PRESS IT AND HAVE IT ON THE SHELVES BY NEXT WEEK!!!!!!! While it may not have happened EXACTLY like that, King Records did release Freddy King Goes Surfin', an album containing the very same songs (in precisely the same running order) as Let's Hide Away... with crowd noise dubbed over the music. Did the ruse work? Though it didn't sell as well as the original, Freddy King Goes Surfin' did find an audience. Like Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger, the album's title is such a preposterous premise that it surely snagged many buyers on that fact alone. And no amount of ersatz cheering and cocktail glass tinkling could cover up the six-string genius of King and his almighty Texas tone. Need proof? Fellow Lone Star blues maven Billy F. Gibbons picked Freddy King Goes Surfin' as one of his Top Ten Favorite Blues Albums of All Time. As for Sundazed, we know not to mess with a good thing. Sourced from the original King mono masters and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. (RTI), we are proud to present Freddy King Goes Surfin' in its original running order with its original cover art. Sundazed is proud to present Freddy King Goes Surfin’ in magnificent mono fidelity. Instrumental Album From the Guitarist Idolized by Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Stevie Ray Vaughan! Freddie King’s second all-instrumental album, Freddy King Gives You a Bonanza of Instrumentals, originally released in 1965 on King Records’ Federal subsidiary, continued the artist’s winning streak, with such memorable King originals as “Manhole,” “Freeway 75,” “Low Tide” and “Funnybone.” The 12-song LP demonstrates once again why King was one of his generation’s most revered electric guitarists. Although his career was tragically cut short by his death at the age of 42, Freddie King was one of America’s most distinctive and influential electric blues guitarists, leaving an indelible mark on more than one generation of guitar superstars, including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Rolling Stones’ Mick Taylor. The Texas-born axeman began playing guitar at the age of six, and in his teens moved with his family to the South Side of Chicago, where he was inspired by witnessing club gigs by such seminal electric bluesmen as Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers and Elmore James. Originally billed as Freddy King, he began recording in 1957, revealing a massively influential style that merged his Texas and Chicago influences, and soon achieved commercial success with a series of infectious instrumental hits. Sundazed Music’s vinyl edition of this electric blues landmark has been sourced from the original mono masters, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Remington Ride THE GOLDEN BREED - ORIGINAL REMASTERED SOUNDTRACK RECORDING OF THIS 1968 FILM Davie Allan of "The Arrows" fame resurected this superb album from the original analog tapes. The sound is excellent and the songs were some of the best music coming out of the Mike Curb factory in the mid sixties. Allan pens some of his uptempo and very likeable instrumentals. Some of Sidewalk Records' artists were responsible for the vocals including Mike Clifford, Bob Bennett & Phil Kasper of "The Riptides". Allan, Guy Hemric and Jerry Styner, Harley Hatcher, and Mike Curb wrote most of the songs. This soundtrack has kept the surfing movie genre alive with a fresh new release. "Waimea Bay", "What Turns You On" (the vocal on side 2), and "The Goldnen Breed" final cut vocal are all favorites. All you need is a turntable. Hope Capitol decides to release it on a remastered CD BUT IT NEVER HAS! TRACKS ARE: SIDE ONE - THE GOLDEN BREED - HAWAIIAN CIRCUS - WHAT TURNS YOU ON - GOLDEN TIME - CORAL BELOW SIDE TWO - WHAT TURNS YOU ON - HIGH RISE - OVER THE FALLS - WAIMEA BAY - SURFER PARADISE - THE GOLDEN BREED GARY USHER BAREFOOT ADVENTURE: VERY RARE COLLECTORS 4 STAR SESSIONS 2LP -One of the most stubborn myths of revisionist musical history is this: the early '60s were the Dark Ages of American pop, a sad and embarrassing era of prefab teen idols and silly dance crazes that was put out of its misery by the British Invasion. In reality, strange and wonderful things were happening with American music in the months before The Beatles met Ed Sullivan, creative big bangs that continued to evolve for decades to come. In Detroit, Berry Gordy was defining the Motown Sound, while Stax and James Brown were inventing soul music. At 1650 Broadway, the Aldon table of songwriters was bringing sophistication to teen pop, while The Four Seasons reinvented group harmony. And in California, where America's youth culture was being born, a trio of songwriters - Brian Wilson, Roger Christian and Gary Usher - were drawing up the blueprints for the West Coast sound. This collection explores Gary Usher's tenure as co-architect of the happiest pop music ever written, a guileless celebration of sun, surf and cars that's become an enduring symbol of the American dream. Barefoot Adventure does more than simply collect a bunch of songs that sound great on the car radio and mean exactly what they say (take that, psychedelic music!). It's also a remarkable glimpse of the process, of a struggling songwriter angling for a break, sometimes tap dancing in tangents, oblivious to the bulls eye he was hitting on the way to forging an important new sound. So here's the whole story, 36 terrific tracks, including exclusive Sundazed interviews with Usher himself, plus a gorgeous package with an illuminating essay and track commentary by author and Usher-biographer Stephen McParland. It's musical scholarship that's perfect for parties! We're not sure if this is history masquerading as fun or vice-versa, but we're definitely sure that it's fun. Which, in the end, is all that matters. "It was truly a magical period, in the sense that it was a different record business than we have today... It was a spark of rawness, innocence-what was in our hearts and minds would end up in a record the next day. Brian was 19, I was like 22, and Dennis, I know for a fact, was not old enough to drive! WE were just young - young, very raw kids who found ourselves in a position to be able to make music. None of us had any training - and it was just simply learn as we go along. And it was only made for the kids - it was never made for the professionals... I mean, when the Beach Boys hit, we were all kinda, like, shocked..." - Gary Usher Features: • Sundazed Hig-Quality Vinyl Double LP • 36 incredible tracs from the original analog mono masters • Includes 21 never-before-heard recordings! • Rare photos and graphics included • Detailed liner notes by Stephen McParland • Gatefold Jacket Selections: 1. Producer Norman Petty may have been a freakin' a-hole, but he helped a number of West Texas musicians get their sounds onto record. From seminal rock-gods like Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison to "who's that?" folks like Terry Noland and "Peanuts" Wilson, Southwestern rock 'n' roll owes a tip of the Hatlo hat to Petty's precise, sympathetic production work. The Fireballs were the best guitar instrumental group in US rock 'n' roll. [We are talking non-surf guitar groups, lest some beach-nuts jump my baggies for this statement.] The Fireballs were built around the harmonic, tough, deft and soulful pickin' of leader George Tomsco. Tomsco is one of the best rock guitarists, IMHO. His is an instantly recognizable sound, equally full of subtlety and fire. He wrote much of the group's repertoire, and despite a swinging-door policy that reduced the group, at one point, from quintet to trio, Tomsco's musical vision saw the group through many changes with grace.
