Item:264718580114Taino. Exquisite Stone Cohoba Ladle. Full Figure Handle. PreColumbian. Taino. Large grey basalt-like cohoba spoon with full figure handle depicting a squatting bird man or shaman. Detailed margin surrounds closed eye suggesting the dream state following the consumption of cohoba. Spoons and elaborately carved wooden ladles were uses to distribute cohoba during hallucinogenic ceremonies. The figuration on the handle empowered the cohoba user to reach certain deities or ancestors on his cosmic quest. The dark areas front and back are natural stone inclusion coloration. Length 7.3” or 19.6cm. This piece was originally from the Dominican Republic, found near Macoris D.R.
