The rosette may be a royal Judean Symbol. Culture/period – PhoenicianDate – 1000 B.C. - 600 B.C. Smooth sides with dark green patina. Dimensions – Side length: 2.5 cm. Weight: 163.7 gr. Comments – The rosette on the base is a unique and interesting phenomenon. Stamped rosettes appear on jar handles from many late Iron Age Judean sites; the jars appear to be typological successors of the jars which bear the royal or LMLK stamp on their handles. Many of the rosettes on the stamped jar handles have eight petals, as does that on this weight. It is agreed by scholars that the rosette-stamped handles belong to the seventh and the beginning of the sixth centuries B.C. At Lachish they were related to the Stratum II, at Ramat Rahel they were found only above the floors of the palace, and at ‘En Gedi they occurred in Stratum V. There is a possibility that the stamped jar handles with a rosette and this weight are contemporary. “Scholars have already suggested that the rosette may be a royal Judean Symbol. It is widely accepted that the rosette stamps are connected with the LMLK stamps and may have succeeded them both functionally and chronologically. The term LMLK appears not only on jar handles but also on at least one weight, where it is next to the numeral sign. In this connection we should note that the Bible mentions ‘the king’s weight’ (II Samuel 14:26), and the parallel terms are found in the Elephantine papyri of the Persian period. We may assume that the rosette symbol replaced the term LMLK on weights and jar handles” (A Group of Iron Age Scale Weights, GABRIEL BARKAY, Israel Exploration Journal Vol. 28, No. 4 (1978), pp. 209-217).This weight may represent 20 shekels - 163.7 gr. = 20 shekels @ 8.25 gr. per shekel (8.25 x 20 = 165 gr.).
