BLACK MERCY. • Item Description This listing from a smoke free home is for a professionally graded CGC 9.4 (NEAR MINT) copy with perfect WHITE pages, of the dramatically-more-rare NEWSSTAND $1.60 CANADIAN COVER PRICE VARIANT version of Superman Annual #11, DC Comics, 1985, with story by superstar ALAN MOORE which features the FIRST APPEARANCE OF BLACK MERCY (who has appeared in the Supergirl TV series) , plus appearances by Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman!! As of 10/8/2023 the CGC census shows a mere 14 of these variants on record as having passed through their doors to date in total (source: www.cgccomics.com/census/gradesstandard.asp?title=Superman+Annual&issue=11&publisher=D.C.+Comics&year=1985&issuedate=1985 ), thus to have a chance to bid on one at no-reserve auction marks a rare bidding opportunity indeed so don't pass up this chance to win one of these awesome newsstand price variants featuring this key first character appearance!! Senior Overstreet Advisor Jon McClure categorizes these desirable variants under the "Type 1A Price Variant" definition. Type 1A Canadian price variants (CPVs for short) have been compared to the Type 1 Price Variants that McClure made famous [such as the 35 cent variants (e.g. see Star Wars #1 from 1977)] because just like those past price variant examples the indicia and interior contents of CPVs are 100% identical to regular copies, and the publisher gave the small batch of copies a higher cover price. In both cases, the cover price variants were published by THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER -- DC in this case -- at the same time as the regular copies (as first print originals), on the same manufacturing equipment, same paper, same ink, same indicia, same interior contents. In the case of Star Wars the purpose of the higher cover price variant was to test-market a price increase, whereas in the case of CPVs the purpose of the higher cover price variant was to sell into the Canadian newsstand market. With that market so tiny -- with Canada making up less than 10% of the North American newsstand market by population in 1985 -- the newsstand price variants in turn are extremely hard to find compared to the regular newsstand type and the well-preserved direct edition type! CGC themselves recently referred to CPVs as a trophy 🏆 for collectors given that it is THE RAREST OF THE 1ST PRINT TYPES for issues where CPVs exist (see attached quote)! • Shipping Information Package weight for me to ship one carefully-boxed slab is a 3lb box; additional comics can be combined and I've configured my settings to add 2lb for each additional comic. "Calculated shipping" has been enabled where eBay will automatically calculate your actual shipping cost, and the offered domestic shipping services are USPS Priority Mail, USPS Ground, UPS Ground, FedEx Ground, or FedEx Home Delivery. For international buyers, I have checked the box to participate in eBay's International Shipping Program. I have 20 years of experience selling comics on eBay and always take great care to package rare comics well for shipment — my assumption when packing, is that the box will be dropped on its corner by a postal worker, and therefore needs to be protected accordingly. I am a collector like you and I've received my fair (unfair) share of cracked cases and bent-up books. So rest assured, great care will be taken to see that the comic will reach you safely; some of my positive eBay feedback responses include these comments: "The Best Packing I've Ever Seen", "Fast international shipping, bomb-proof packaging", "Lightning fast! Book very well packed, could have survived nuclear attack!" • Thanks For Looking! If you have any questions just let me know. Be sure to check out my other items because my offerings are highly curated so if this one caught your interest, chances are I have other listings you'll find interesting too!
  • Condition: Like New
  • Condition: ACTUAL SCANS. With perfect WHITE page quality, in CGC 9.4 (NEAR MINT) grade, this is one of just 14 census copies on record of the much rarer US-published Type 1A cover price variant NEWSSTAND version of Superman Annual #11 featuring an Alan Moore story, the FIRST APPEARANCE OF BLACK MERCY, and appearances by Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman! Newsstands in CANADA received copies with a higher cover price than newsstands in the US for a period of time in the 1980's, and CGC has a distinct VARIANT census entry for these variants as "Canadian Price Variant"-- and as of the 10/8/2023 census just 14 CPVs have passed through CGC's doors to date for this issue number in total, with that low number driven by the newsstand exclusivity of the variants plus the fact that Canada's population represented less than 10% of the North American newsstand market in 1985. Here's your chance to win one of these elusive newsstand price variants in stunning NEAR MINT grade at NO RESERVE AUCTION! BID NOW!!
