A Roman pottery oil lamp of fine clay covered in a mostly well preserved red-brown slip. The discus is decorated with a high relief image of a two-handled crater with chevron patterns on its body and foliage in very low relief rising from it. There is a large filling hole to the left of the crater and a tiny air circulation hole just beneath it. The discus is separated from the sloping shoulder by two stepped concentric grooves. A rounded circular nozzle extends from the body on one side, while on the opposite side is a prominent raised loop handle accented with two parallel grooves. A very slightly raised disc forms the base, which is impressed with the maker’s stamp MNOVIVUS T, a prominent maker in what is now Tunisia. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Welsh private collection formed between the 1970s and 2008. PUBLISHED: ANTIQUITIES, Bonhams, London, Sale #16777, part of Lot 308, described on page 175. COMPARISONS: British Museum online collection database for Registration Number 1980, 1001.198 (Greek and Roman Antiquities Catalogue Number: Lamp Q2787) for a lamp of nearly the same data by a different maker with a crater and foliage on the discus.
