Item:323944051732Here is a Spiers 13 ½” Panel Plane that, if not rare, is certainly very hard to find. The front is marked MALLEABLE and the entire base is a malleable iron casting. For most of its history Spiers made only dovetailed steel planes. After WW I Spiers was managed by an engineer who introduced new methods including dovetailing steel sides to malleable iron soles and using malleable cast bases on some infill Smoothing Planes. Nigel Lampert references malleable castings for panel planes but note that none are known extant. I am aware of one other owned by a Canadian collector.
