Signed/Embossed 19Th Century Richard Josey Engraving - The Shakespeare Monument

This large professionally matted and framed 19th Century Engraving was purchased at an amazing estate on N St. in Georgetown many years ago. The sale was by invitation only. I was fortunate because I know one of the interior designers who was invited at that time.

Approximately 37 1/4 inches tall

Approximately 27 1/4 inches wide

Approximately one and three-quarter inches deep.

The paper on the back has been torn.

Matting is salmon color. Heavy gorgeous driftwood like frame with gold colored fillet.

The script writing in pencil on the lower left-hand side of the engraving reads: Painted by Thomas Gainsborough, R. A., born on May 14, 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England and died on August 2, 1788 in London, England.

The script writing in pencil on the lower right-hand side of the engraving reads: Engraved by Richard Josey, born on October 4, 1840 in Reading, U.K. and died on February 6, 1906 in Shepherd’s Bush, London, U.K.

Centered below engraving the following is written in script:

David Garrick

David Garrick was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer who influenced nearly all aspects of theatrical practice throughout the 18th century. He was born on February 19, 1717 in Hereford, Herefordshire, England and died on January 20, 1779 in London, England.

This is a very old piece of artwork. It will have minor signs of age. For example, when studying the engraving up close, you can barely make out what appears to be areas where the engraving was slightly creased. Almost too inconspicuous to even notice but better to disclose everything upfront.
