ABOUT E. H. SARGENT: According to the "History of Chicago; Its Commercial and Manufacturing Interests and Industry..." (By: I. D. Guyer, Chicago, [Church, Goodman & Cushing Printers], Copyright 1862, Page 77) "...we may mention Mr. E. H. SARGENT, whose elegantly fitted up Drug Store is located on the corner of State and Randolph Streets. Mr. Sargent has been thoroughly educated in Pharmacy and Chemistry, having been uninterruptedly engaged in it, in all its details, for nearly twenty years, enjoying advantages rarely conferred upon others. His store is supplied with all the modern pharmaceutical preparations, new remedies, etc., accredited by modern Chemistry and science. Extracts, perfumes and toilet articles of the choicest foreign and domestic production, may be found here in great variety. Among other things, we noticed an assortment of brushes, manufactured in Paris for this house, Mr. Sargent's name marked upon each by the manufacturer. Their facilities for obtaining goods from first hands enable them to supply the trade or the consumer at greatly reduced prices from ordinary rates..." E. H. Sargent and Company traces its beginning to the 1849 Gold Rush. Ezekiel H. Sargent, a young pharmacist from Boston, moved to Chicago to become a partner in a drugstore, selling assaying and prospecting equipment to prospectors on their way West. In 1852, Ezekiel bought out his partners' interest and renamed his store E. H. Sargent & Company. Sargent's store was destroyed in the 1871 Great Chicago Fire. Four years later, he moved from the northern edge of what was later to become downtown Chicago, rebuilt, and published his first catalog in 1875. It was the first recorded attempt at mail order solicitation in the laboratory supply business. In 1889, Sargent incorporated his business in Illinois. The sale of the drugstore in 1904 and the acquisition of Richards & Company, Ltd., a New York scientific equipment company, marked Sargent's total commitment to the laboratory supply business. Just prior to World War I, Sargent established research facilities and manufacturing operations that enabled the company to develop precision instruments. Sargent's efforts were devoted to manufacturing and supplying laboratory apparatus, chemicals and instruments. In 1919, needing more space, Sargent moved into a six-story building on East Superior Street in Chicago. In 1941, Sargent became the first laboratory supply company to open a branch warehouse that would better serve a growing chemical industry at the start of World War II. Sargent moved its headquarters from downtown Chicago to a new and modern manufacturing and warehouse facility on the northwest side. Other sales and distribution centers were subsequently opened nationwide. In 1968, E. H. Sargent Company and the Welch Scientific Company merged under the name Sargent-Welch Scientific Company, thereby forming one of the nation's leading suppliers of science education products. (Our gratitude is extended in part to sargentwelch.com for some of the company's history). TELEGRAPHIC CRYPTIC CODES?: Back when Wɘstern Union was pretty much the only way to quickly get information across the country, (a limited number of American homes or businesses had telephones in 1937), the "sky was the limit" on the cost of the telegram - whether for individuals, corporations, or some small laboratory. "A word" was any string of letters not exceeding 15 characters per word, (a, at, in, by, the, of, to - - - were each charged at the rate of "one word"). The cost of a telegram quickly rose if a lot of information needed to be transmitted. "A cute cat up on E. 1st Street ran!" would be a NINE word telegram and billed accordingly. Many companies (in an effort to keep their customer's communications / ordering costs lower) published "cryptic telegraph codes" in their catalogs or allowed customers to use generally accepted cryptic codes. This allowed customers to telegraph one or two "code words" and convey loads of information! Sargent & Company allowed their customers to use any of four commonly used, telegraphic cryptic codes.
