Small early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Mary Leonora Wills aged 9 - 1833. This little sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Mary Leonora was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central flower bowl with a flower to each side, whilst the middle section contains the following verse THE DAY OF LIFE The morning hours of cheerful light of all the days are best But as they speed their hasty flight, if every hour is spent aright We sweetly sink to sleep at night and pleasant is our rest ~~~~~~~~~ And life is like a summer's day, it seems so quickly past Youth is the morning bright and gay and if tis spent in wisdom's way We meet old age without dismay and death is sweet at last The title of the verse has a bird to its left and right whilst the sides of the verse are stitched with a flower, tree basket and standing figure. The lower section of the linen is stitched with two central standing figures with a flower and floral urn beside them and Mary Leonora's details and the date of October 23rd 1833 below. Mary Leonora's age has two flowers to each side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border. T he linen h as overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places with a few small areas of damage. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass  so  I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks  appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years.  The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised frame with integral painted slip. The frame is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and areas of blooming to the varnish. Measures 7 3/4" x 12 3/4" (sight size) and 11 1/4" x 16 1/4" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES. PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION. SHIPPING WILL BE VIA FEDEX OR PARCELFORCE - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.
