Chinese Ancient Coin Southern Song Dynasty in the Shao Xing period (AD 1131). Hartill 17.52
The "Shaoxing Tong Bao" coins were minted during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty, specifically in the Shaoxing era (1131-1162 AD). The obverse inscription is in regular script, read directly, and is said to be written by Emperor Gaozong himself. The coins come in denominations of Xiaoping (1 cash), Zhe Er (2 cash), Zhe San (3 cash), Zhe Wu (5 cash), and Zhe Shi (10 cash), with Xiaoping (1 cash) coins being relatively rare . The Zhe Wu and Zhe Shi coins with clockwise inscriptions in slim gold script are considered rare and precious. There are also iron coins in existence, with the Zhe Er coins featuring the character "Li" on the reverse side being minted in the tenth year of the Shaoxing era (1140 AD) in Lizhou. Additionally, there are coins with a bright back. Wang Yinjia's "Quan Wei Cong Tan" states, "The black-backed Shaoxing coins required more labor, and the minting quantity was relatively small. The plain-backed coins were made of inferior copper, with cost-saving measures implemented, which aligns with the physical evidence today.
