It is titled "Sleigh Bells" a limited edition by C.A. Brown. This colorful china plate is the first in a series of six studies by American folk artist C.A Brown, entitled "American Tapestries". It was issued in 1977 in a limited edition of 10,000, of which 7,500 went to the U.S.A. / 1,500 to Canada / and 1,000 to Australia. This was a sample I purchased to show my clients as a fine gift collection. This is hand numbered as #7,800 of the 10,000 run.
The plate is in perfect condition -no cracks, no wear- and comes in its original yellow box, with a small 3-page leaflet containing information on the artist and on this particular work. It was never displayed, and as such in virtually as new condition.
The plate is in fine bone China and produced in England. The diameter is 10.4in (26.5cm) and box is 11.4in x 11.4in (29cm x 29cm). As mentioned, no marks, chips, discoloration, etc. on plate nor gift box.
The artist wrote about "Sleigh Bells": "(...) It's a peaceful, quiet Sunday morning... a time to rest and to enjoy the simple pleasures -a book, a crackling fire and, for the young at heart, a skate on the pond, a new snowman. (...)".
An interesting point to note: On the top inside lid - When you lift the top, the inscription ""Collectors International by Royal Doulton" appears inverted. And that writing is an integral part of the lid and unable to be moved. I did research on the plate and this is the only one like this I found - although there weren't many to view. I don't know if perhaps the reason being that this was a salesman's sample has anything to do with it.
This fine gift will add joy and beauty to your holidays for generations to come. A very rare find for sure.
