The charismatic vessel is of good size and with a superb burial iridescence. Such ancient necessities served for a variety of storage purposes, surviving examples comprising prime bring back from Grand Tour and more recent visits to the Eastern Mediterranean and Holy Land - charismatic and physically attractive remembrances of the adventure. This one was apparently acquired during the 1960's. These is not an area of extreme expertise for me and I do not know the exact technical name for the shape here. That said this particular vessel has great presence as an intact example. What may appear as fine cracks at the mouth are clearly contraction lines from the original mouth blown making which do not go through. While I'm not sure what caused that soil incrusted fissure at the bottom (possibly a burst air bubble, though I am not digging out that incrusted soil to find out - see pics), it does not go through to the inside. What little I can see of its edges has burial patination - so an ancient feature. Condition is quite fine overall, with that beautiful iridescent burial patination to the surfaces. Those surfaces still show mentioned evidence of hardened adhered soil and mineral incrustations as proper for such an excavated vial. There are no cracks or any hidden restorations to dampen your day. Size is about 4 5/16 in. vertical and 1 3/4 in. across the bulbous bottom. If you collect the material culture of the Holy Land during the period of Roman occupation and early Judeo - Christian times, or simply wish this single improvement to the ambiance of a room in your home, this pair will have great meaning for you. :: Payment Terms PAYMENT WITHIN 10 DAYS OF AUCTION CLOSING.
