Seller: incatreasuresltd (1,633) 100%, Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ships to: US, Item: 202063300395 A very nice and hard to find rare intact Roman/Cypriot Oinochoe terracotta jug or vessel with great encrustation and patina. This pottery piece was mad in Cyprus at the time that the Romans or their precursors ruled the region. The piece has a curved handle extending from the lip to the shoulder of the vessel and characteristic trefoil mouth. A triangulated opening at top possibly pours in e directions. Often highly decorated oinochoe pieces were buried in the graves of children among the wealthy population. They come in all sizes and some of the highly decorated ones can be auctioned for thousands of dollars. I purchased this from a collector of antiquities that has been selling his collection. The encrustation makes it likely that it was pulled from underwater in the Mediterranean Sea at some point making the patina very nice addition. Characterized by a curved handle extending from the lip to the shoulder, and a round or trefoil mouth. "Oinochoe may be decorated or undecorated. Oinochoe typically have only one handle at the back and may include a trefoil mouth and pouring spout. Their size also varies considerably; most, at up with trefoil mouth. Small examples with scenes of children, as in the example illustrated, were placed in the graves of children.[1]to 25 cm tall, could be comfortably held and poured with one hand, but there are much larger examples." -WikipediaRare to find now Culture: Roman/Cypriot Ca: 1200 BC Size: 5.5" tall x 3" wide Provenance: ex: C Hudson, private collection, Marietta, GA; ex: Dr. Walter Young, private collection, Colorado Springs, CO Authenticity with lifetime guarantee by Inca Treasures LTD.
