"SHADOWS OF PARADISE"

Hi folks, This is a Roman Bronze  Mithraic/Sol Invictus Evil-Eye Ring 3rd Century BC , It is in great shape and a strong, beautiful ring. Some call it a "Evil-Eye" ring, but it is much more, it was worn for good luck & protection that came from the God's. If there is an even number of concentric circles you are asking the Female Goddesses for protection, if there was an odd number you are asking the male gods for protection & for good luck. Gambler's, Solders & Gladiators wore ring's like this one. The ring is a large size 11 & if needed can be sized by your local jeweler. Good luck & good bidding ! Peace & Blessings, Grover...
Invictus ("Unconquered, Invincible") was an epithet for several deities of classical Roman religion, including the supreme deity Jupiter, the war god Mars, Hercules, Apollo, and Silvanus. It had been in use from the 3rd century BC. The Roman cult to Sol is continuous from the "earliest history" of the city until the institution of Christianity as the exclusive state religion. Scholars have sometimes regarded the traditional Sol and Sol Invictus as two separate deities, but the rejection of this view by S. E. Hijmans has found supporters.
An inscription of AD 102 records a restoration of a portico of Sol in what is now the Trastevere area of Rome by a certain Gaius Iulius Anicetus. While he may perhaps have had in mind an allusion to his own cognomen, which is the Latinized formof the Greek equivalent of invictus, ἀνίκητος (aniketos), the earliest extant dated inscription that uses invictus as an epithet of Sol is from AD 158. Another, stylistically dated to the 2nd century, is inscribed on a Roman phalera (ornamental disk): inventori lucis soli invicto augusto ("to the contriver of light, sol invictus augustus").Augustus is a regular epithet linking deities to the Imperial cult.[citation needed]Sol Invictus played a prominent role in the Mithraic mysteries, and was equated with Mithras himself.
The relation of the Mithraic Sol Invictus to the public cult of the deity with the same name is unclear and perhaps non-existent.

~PATINA~
*On the subject of patina, I have had several emails telling and asking me if taking the so-called "patina" off the piece lessens it's value. In my opinion it is not patina but dirt. Patina is found on bronze statues and forms because of their exposure to the air. Almost all of the items I sell and the items like mine on-line, have come out of the ground. They are found either in flint lined safety boxes put into the ground by the original owners or in clumps of dirt if the boxes have broken open, which is the case most of the time. The dirt has to be broken away to even see the items and that is not a patina, but dirt. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. Most sellers do not want to do this with the bronze ( jewelry or coins ) because it is time consuming and hard work with little monetary return for the extra effort. I clean them and I put in the hours to do it ( one ring can take 2 or more hours to clean properly. ) because I feel that they should be seen as their last owners saw them, bright and shiny ( I leave the inner part of the ring as-is on most rings so the new owner can be the first person since the last owner to touch it once the "PATINA" wears-off.). As far as lessening the value, most of these items are less than $100 and in the 16 years I have been selling these items on eBay there has been little change in the price. In the end it is up to you, the buyer, to decide for yourselves if you would rather have a clean or dirty ring (if you would like a dirty ring, please let me know & I will show you a Variety you can choose from.).
