A variant on the Roman bronze "Kraftig-profilierte" type brooch. The surfaces are dark green. The coiled spring is fitted through a vertical plate projecting down from the head of the bow. The catch plate drops down from below the foot, while the bow itself is gracefully divided into slightly angled surfaces with a small fan shaped ridge rising from its mid-point. The coil and pin are original. This variant probably dates from the very end of the type's history and shows influence from other brooch styles, including knee brooches and early trumpet types PROVENANCE: Ex UK private collection.
