Seller: wear-the-past (2,518) 100%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371786164634 This is an ancient Roman hardstone intaglio, dating to the 1st century A.D. It is cut with a rural scene, of a horse and her young foal. It is a rare subject, popular during the Augustan period. The mare, is licking the newly born foal who is sitting on the ground, a tree springs up behind her. Sadly the back of the design has a chip. Such an intaglio would have been set within a gold or silver finger ring, used as a personal signature for sealing documents and letters. The gem has patches of patination from thousands of years buried in the ground. Today this intaglio would look great remounted into a gold finger ring or as another treasure for your collection.OBJECT: IntaglioCULTURE: RomanDATE: c. 1st century A.D.MATERIAL: CarnelianSIZE: 11.3mm x 9.2mm x 2.8mmWEIGHT: 0.4gThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
