Make an offer and own this great lot! Bronze Pair of Single Light Sconces from the firm of E. F. Caldwell & Co., New York. A Classical Design With a Faux "Smoke Bell" device meant to replicate an early gas light. I have collected Caldwell for 20 years and have never seen this design before. Signed on the reverse with the Caldwell gold foil marking, a way to designate pieces from the firm during the later production period. Heavy Bronze with hand cut shades, measures 18" tall from bottom of sconce to top of shade. Enlarge images and see the detail of these wall lights! Each sconce comes complete with four pieces: Shade, Sconce, Hook and Smoke Bell. I will be offering the most amazing collection of antique lighting from a major collection over the next year. I collected the pieces over the last 20+ years as I worked on a book about the Caldwell Company. The pieces are mostly from the E. F. Caldwell Company of New York City and cover production from 1895 - 1945. They are not cheaply made like the modern copies. Each piece comes with a unique story and can be tracked back, in most cases, to the original client. When possible an original image of the piece will be supplied. Additionally, the New York Public Library holds the customer archives and they can be searched to determine for whom the piece was created. Caldwell sold to only the wealthiest of customers and pieces from the firm are usually bespoke, created just for Rockefeller, Jay Gould, Carnegie, Morgan and a who's-who of the wealthiest men and women in the United States. When you purchase one a piece from the E. F. Caldwell Company, you are truly creating a link between the Gilded Age and today. You will not find pieces like this in a big box store. Candle covers are not included with sale. I have been contacted a few times by buyers who question whether all pieces from the Edward F. Caldwell Co. are always marked with the "C" in the diamond mark. The short answer is "No". Caldwell did sign most pieces but there seemed to be no steadfast rule that each piece needed to be signed. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the signature often appeared stamped into a fiber board backing that was attached to many sconces with two small set screws. The backs were often lost over the years and, with them, the signature. A foil label was also employed later in production but it is often lost or chipped and unreadable, leaving the piece seemingly unsigned. For those interested in authenticating production from the Caldwell Co., it is advisable to turn to the excellent on-line photographic archives supplied by the Smithsonian Museum branch in Manhattan. The archives provide proof positive regarding the production of most Caldwell pieces and allow the owner to date the pieces and, on occasion, discover for whom the lighting piece was created.
