This Rare Pair of Original Portraits of Man in Derby By Mexican Listed Artist Matias Santoyo.  Dated Nov 19, 1946 and Nov 20 1946.  Very distinctive facial expression of a U.S. businessman and his wife in Derby race in Mexico when it was illegal in the U.S. The paintings are recently double matted & framed and in very nice framed condition.   Protected under glass. Size: 20"x26" approx. Framed: 30" x 36". Came from an estate in San Marino, CA.

Artist Santoyo moved to New York from Mexico in the 30s. He belonged to a group of artists comprising Rufino Tamayo, José Juan Tablada, Alfonso Pena and Miguel Covarrubias, among others. During that time, he improved his drawing technique and use of color. When, came back to Mexico, where he produced extremely creative works. Santoyo painted murals in Mexico, one of his most famous art work is the commanding floor-to-ceiling painted murals in the Rosarito Beach Hotel’s blue-and-white-tiled lobby. The artist’s signature is visible, along with his brief statement in Spanish that translates: “Through these halls passed and here decorated Matias Santoyo.”   Santoyo worked in Hollywood for MGM studios as an illustrator and designed sets in the 30s-40s .
