Rare Late 18th/ Early 19th Century WELSH Rushlight Holder Nip Wrought Iron hand made by Blacksmith in North Wales c1780-1820 Tripod base on pad feet, unusual copper alloy collar with engraved date, hard to read, possibly 1820 Thumb Press Sprung Jaws Presented in good order with beautiful aged patina Standing approximately 10” or 25cm in height A rare survivor A simple and cheap form of lighting in many homes. Rushes were collected in late summer when the skin was peeled, leaving a small strip to give support. The rush was then drawn through melted fat in a “grisset” pan. When dry they could be held in the rushlight holder and lit.
