Seller: nostalgic*treasures*and*antiques..delks (975) 100%, Location: Indianapolis, Indiana, Ships to: US, Item: 252662923995 Amazing Primitive Antique Planting "Dibble"Hand Forged & Shaped MetalWood Handle 1700-1850 (best guess)Reduced $65! You will not find another like this one. Very old primitive antique Dibble planting tool. This is hand forged & shaped from a single metal rod it appears. Great patina, but still in good shape. I believe it is iron, but I am not a metal expert.Measures just over 12 inches by 5 inches wide at handle. I think the handle is hickory, but am not 100% sure. This appears from all elements to be a pre Civil War tool & maybe as old as late 1600's.It has an very unique shape for a dibble & may have had use as a knife or scrapper as well. Awesome primitive look.I found this at an antique auction in Indiana. An antique dealer had tried to hide this tool & an accompanying letter (seen in picture gallery) in a box flat, where bidders could not see it. I lucked out, as the flat box was brought up for bidding when the dealer had left the room to bid at another auction ring a room away. It was sold as possibly being used in a 1600's Shakespearean play as the letter could be read to imply (and possibly by Shakespeare himself). I do not believe that to be the case, but it was not cheap. I think the "used in play" refers to the word and not this tool. It is perhaps old enough to fit the era, but doubt it would have landed in Indiana. The attached letter is a little quirky, but indicates someone thought enough to put a letter with an antique that was handed down to them. You can read attached letter and discern for yourself. I will include letter in sale. I cut off last 2 lines of letter as they had a person's name on it & I did not feel comfortable sharing that in public. I'm selling as to its antique value alone. We ship quickly and with care. We have many rare primitives and antiques in our store & more to come. We try to specialize in "rare" and unique and have sold hundreds of such items. Of course, we have many more common collectibles as well. All items above $100 are fully insured. Condition: SEE COMMENTS AND PICTURES, Color: Brown & Metalic, Material: Iron
