Provenance

These gorgeous and formidable dragon ladies are English C. 1800. They are hand forged iron, not cast, and vary slightly in proportion and detail though clearly a pair.

The lady dragons were acquired from a castle by Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Courtauld (of the Courtauld Institute ). They were excellent friends to my father Samuel Dushkin and gave them to him and my mother Louis Marion Rorimer as a wedding present in 1936. They were in my parent’s apartment in Paris, France at 160 Rue De L’ Universite and though the apartment was requisitioned by German officers during the war they were safe (as was most of the art was not taken by the concierge). My uncle James Rorimer was able, toward the end of the war to watch over the apartment as his capacity as Captain in the American army in charge of finding and repatriating art taken by the Germans (he wrote a book “SURVIVAL” on the subject).

The ladies were brought to America a few years after the war ended in 1948-49.

(Signed by) Edith Rorimer Dushkin Soeiro

I have to start by saying that the photos do not do justice to these amazing large hand wrought iron dragon ladies. Superb detail and fine carving. The feathers on the wings are very lifelike. The claws were made to be able to have the dragons freely stand on an iron bar. From the nose and the body all the way to the end of the tail is one piece, then the tongue, ears, wings and legs were added. These dragons will have a huge architectural statement being placed at the entrance of a house or a business. They can be also adapted to be a phenomenal pair of scones or simply having them displayed on a pair of stands at the entry. These dragons measure 6’8” L (tip of the tongue to the end of the tail) X 30” H (from the claw to the tip of the wing) X 21” (wing span) the other dragon is 6’2” L (tip of the tongue to the end of the tail) X 30” H (from the claw to the tip of the wing) X 20” (wing span) and both dragons are in very condition. Should you have any questions please free to ask since all sales are final. Buyer pays for shipping and insurance.
