Antique Bronze Set of Burmese Hintha Birds / Ducks Opium Weights. Rare.

Title: Antique Burmese Aquatic Hintha Bird Opium Weights. Set of 9. Late 19th C.

Overview:x A rare set of late 19th century Burmese Opium Weights, exquisitely crafted and produced by artisan from the Shan States region of Myanmar, depicting the mythical 'Hintha' Bird, also known as Hamsa, an aquatic bird which inhabited the Himalaya Forest of southern Burma, and was considered by Burmese to be a sacred animal symbolic of purity, divine knowledge and cosmic breath.

During the 18th and 19th century these weights were used to measure opium in traditional Burmese markets, with each weight intricately crafted with individualized character, featuring a slightly different design, shape, and size, which adds charm and beauty to each weight, along with the historical significances they carry when trade markets in Burma (Myanmar) were the main source of barter. This particular style of weights were lost wax cast in what is known as "Pure Bronze", containing very little actual tin alloy, but owes its color to metals such as copper, arsenic, and antimony. However despite their color, the weights are still mainly about ninety-percent copper. They were mostly produced during the 18th to 19th century, and are easily identifiable by not only their brilliant color, but also by the high degree of decorative tooling and metal working skills, achieved by only the most accomplished artisans of the Imperial courts. The age of these pieces are apparent by their smooth worn away surface, where lines and grooves have faded from extensive handling over time.

Description: The Hintha Birds are boldly modeled in the shape of a small ground pecking fowl, seated on a octagonal base, incised with a horizontal band of small cubes, delicately detailed with closely fitted wings and tail plumage, bulging eyes, pointed beak, side wings and crested headdress arches to its tail. Beautifully cast with smooth naturally aged tarnished dark brownish patina.

Observation: Excellent condition, with minor ware from handling during daily usage. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.

Dimensions: Height: Largest Bird at 3.75 inches (9.53cm) down to the smallest bird at .50 inches (1.27cm).
