This Maru depicts 4 chapters from the Heian period novel, The Tale of Genji, on each side. There is a total of 8 chapters of the tale depicted on this obi. Interspersed along the length of the Maru are Uta-garuta, or Poetry Cards. For your consideration: An exceedingly RARE, Maru obi, hand-woven, circa 1950's. A Maru obi is the finest and most expensive obi. A Maru obi has a continuous design on the entire obi, front and back, unlike the fukuro obi that has a design on 60% of it. Because this obi depicts The Tale of Genji, it is a hand-woven Tapestry that tells a story. A Maru obi took more than a year to make, at approximately a centimeter or two per day. Please see the photo of an artist weaving an obi. Only royalty or extremely wealthy families could afford to commission a Maru obi. This Maru cost twenty thousand dollars or more to make 70 years ago. Fine obis were so valuable that they were part of a family's inheritance. Obis are no longer designed or woven by hand. Vintage and antique obis are, therefore, priceless pieces of history and some of the finest silk brocade ever produced. This Maru depicts 4 chapters from the Heian period novel, The Tale of Genji, on each side. There is a total of 8 chapters of the tale depicted on this obi. Interspersed along the length of the Maru are Uta-garuta, or Poetry Cards. These Karuta cards (the general name for the card game) were introduced to Japan by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. Each card has the portrait of a famous poet and the first two lines of a waka poem written in calligraphy. This Maru is woven of fine silk and gold threads. Kyoto obi makers were commissioned by wealthy patrons to design and weave Maru to reflect the woman for whom it was made. This Maru reflects a woman with knowledge of Japanese history and literature. She was intelligent, educated, refined, and had a great knowledge of and respect for Japanese culture. This Maru is from my personal collection and is one of my most special obis. I have to downsize, and therefore, I am passing on this priceless textile to you. There is no visible damage, which is quite remarkable for a Vintage item.
