The New York Board of Trade, prior to closing in 2012, had been the worlds primary pricing index for Softs aka coffee, sugar, cocoa, cotton, and FCOJ (frozen concentrated orange juice) for over a century. It had a rich history both globally and in lower Manhattan. Made famous by the 1982 movie Trading Places, the trading floor at 4 World Trade Center was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The NYBOT made history as the first exchange to re-open the following week, in a back up facility in Long Island City, Queens. From 2002-2012, the NYBOT occupied the 8th floor of the NYMEX building at 1 North End Avenue in Battery Park.

For sale is an actual Full Membership Trading Badge, which allowed the owner to trade any commodity or derivative listed on the exchange. Full memberships cost more than a million dollars prior to the ICE exchange takeover in 2007. The badge is in great condition, please note the black stripe is in the photo only, covering my full name for privacy purposes.

This is my badge, printed in 2008 when I joined the Sugar #11 market pit committee, this badge was mine during my tenure at Macquarie Bank, OTC Global Holdings, and JP Morgan Chase. I brokered all products listed on the floor for the bank until the day the exchange closed, Oct 19th 2012. It is a true piece of financial history, as open outcry commodity markets are gone now, replaced by computer screens and algorithms. I had a good run, clerking and trading on the floor from 1998 to 2012. I traded my own account, opened and closed a couple of businesses, and worked for some of the largest banks on the street.

Some fun facts about my career and this trading badge:

1) I didn’t pick BIGJ as my acronym, I had been called Big Jay or some variation of since my first job as a clerk on the CME floor in Chicago in 1997. There was another Jason clerking in my group, and to differentiate we were nicknamed big and lil. As a 6’5” 300 lb former college offensive tackle for the Northwestern Wildcats, I suppose BIGJ was appropriate.

2) When I got my first badge as BIGJ in the Cotton futures pit in 1999, I was teased mercilessly the first few days, as some of the older brokers thought I was being cocky and predicting how much volume I was going to trade.

2a) At that time my offices were on the 85th floor of WTC 2, and I lived a block from the WTC complex. Between my apartment, my office, and the trading floor I commuted far more vertically than I did horizontally.

3) I started trading coffee options about 6 months after 9/11 and at the time each market was only open for one hour each day as we were in a warehouse in Long Island City with only one functional trading pit.

4) In the Sugar #11 pit, I once watched a man pass out from yelling too loudly. I’ve also seen a man get pants-ed in the middle of filling an order. The best part was he didn’t stop to pull up his drawers until he carded up the whole trade.

5) In 2007 I joined the Sugar Desk for Macquarie, an Australian investment bank. One of the perks was “beer Fridays” where they would literally drink beer at work.

Please feel free to ask any other questions or background on myself, the exchanges I worked on, or the badge itself. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to own a once in a lifetime historic piece of American finance.
