Description: An amazing and extremely rare example of Thai pottery from the Sukhothai period (14-16th Centuries) from the kilns of Si Satchanalai, which is around the old village of Sawankhalok in north central Thailand. The sculpture depicts one of the most famous historical images - The Royal Elephant, a massive animal portrayed standing firmly on four legs, head raised, trunk curled between two large tusk, with a decorative saddle strapped to the elephants torso. This Thai elephant "Chang Thai" is colored in a rich celadon green glaze, along with the lightly speckled ash residue that penetrated the glaze from being fired in a low temperature kiln, making it one of the finest surviving pieces in Sawankhalok pottery.
