TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Title: Khmer Sandstone Bas-Relief Element of a 'Trinity Scene', Mon Dvaravati Style, Pre Angkor. 10/11th C. Temple Ruin Wall Fragment. Siem Reap Provinc, Cambodia. Museum Quality! Description: An exquisite and masterfully conceived 10th to early 11th century example of a Khmer Bas Relief carved Sandstone Architectural Fragment, from a temple precinct in the Siem Reap district of northern Cambodia. The fragment is beautifully rendered in Dvaravati style portraying Buddha flanked by attendants and standing on winged Grotesque. The Trinity or Triad scene is among the most enigmatic Buddhist icons of early pre Angkor era, when the Khmer culture of Cambodia was absorbed by various Buddist traditions of neighboring Mon kingdom of Dvaravati, along with their unique art style, and conceptions reflecting local religious beliefs of the period. SCULPTURE: Mon style, the Triad fragment depicts the Buddha standing in mudra, flanked by two attendants standing aside, holding attribute necessities, dressed in typical Khmer attire wearing braided headdress, with feet planted on double lotus, while riding the Vahana (vehicle) beast, a winged mythical figure of distorted form, traveling through the celestial heavens. The reverse is somewhat featureless with the exception of relief-carved markings and cavities. Typical of pre Angkor architecture this sandstone relief is consistent with the sanctuary style motif, used in wall niches, blind doors, or false windows to decorate the exterior and interior of a Khmer constructed Temple. The fragment is a good solid piece, hand-carved in bas relief, from a solid block of dense sandstone (wacke), modeled with detailing still clearly visible. Overall condition is excellent, unaltered, with a naturally aged patina of mottled hues and color variations, showing normal wear, with minor degradation of the surface from age and the environment in which it was maintained.
