Scarce - Civil War Surgeon's Spring Lancet used for blood letting or venesection during the early years of the war. A simple instrument made of brass with a steel blade that cleanly cuts a vein when used by a doctor. They believed that this procedure would remove excess blood and allow for quicker healing especially gun wounds. As time progressed this method was abandoned but the instruments remained in the surgeons bag. This is an excellent example of a Civil War Lancet that was used during battle and ended up at home with a Civil War veteran. It has been well cared for however the wooden case lining shows some slight blood staining. The bottom of the case shows a little wear as we tried to show in one of our photos....... NOTE:  This is one of the most unique items from the Civil War that we have found in over 50 years of estate sales and auctions.......For a Civil War Re-enactor this is a terrific piece to have on display in their camp......and for a Civil War buff or collector who knows when you'll ever find another one.  Please feel free to contact us with any additional question or concern....thank you
