Surviving samples of Moche art is dominated by ceramics which are generally libation vessels. These magnificent vessels are characterized by fine -line depictions which invite comparisons with ancient Greek vase paintings. Moche iconography was a means of symbolic communication based upon themes and stories. Themes were recounted orally, depicted graphically, then acted out as pageants or rituals. Each entails a cast of characters that may include animals, humans or fanciful beings. The messeges that these pieces attempt to convey, is still not well understood, but probably involves origin myths, heroic deeds, and burial themes. Each fine reproduction has been hand stamped underneath by the Cultural Ministry Of Peru, in order to discourage looting and verifies its high level of finish. Libation bottels stored wine, oils, and the exterior depicts a coiled Moche serpent and a mokey draped near the handle. Imagery appears of front and rear of bottle.
