Item:283257432323Nazca ( NASCA) Pottery Polychrome Figural StirrupVessel - Shaman Anthropomorphic Mythical Being (Human) with a Cat mask . Authentic Antiquity Pottery from PeruI was given the following explaination by a kind ebayer; It is actually an anthropomorphic mythical being (human) with a cat mask who is wearing a lizard signifier. The signifier is like an appendage in the place of a tail that signifies the type or orientation of the mythical being. This is the classic cat masked god. This particular one is somehow affiliated with the supernatural powers of lizards. The gold leaf (with white dots around it) that the figure is holding is always associated with lizards. No one seems to know why. Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A fabulous polychrome effigy vessel of a generally globular form depicting a highly-decorated male shaman who holds ceremonial implements in both hands, perhaps a staff and shield, perhaps a percussive musical instrument (drum in left hand and stick to produce a beat in the right). His expressive face features tattoo-like marks surrounding his eyes, a pointy nose, and full lips, and is capped by a headband/headdress with prominent zoomorphic horns/ears. Adding to his regalia is a white tunic/vest with 'beaded' and fringed sleeves. Finely painted with vivid polychrome pigments in hues of red, cream, white, and black. Size: 4.5" W x 7.25" H (11.4 cm x 18.4 cm). No cracks chips repair or restoration. Part of my private collection.
