Item:390547322519Pre-Columbian NICOYA POLYCHROME AVIAN EFFIGY PYRIFORM TRIPOD VASE, ca. 800-1200 AD This is an absolutely magnificent, museum quality Pre-Columbian POLYCHROME AVIAN EFFIGY PYRIFORM TRIPOD VASE, Middle Polychrome Period, ca. AD 800 - 1200, from the Nicoya Region of Costa Rica. Freely adapted from Late Maya and Toltec pottery styles in Meso-America, this piece, with its central motif of a curved-beak bird (perhaps an eagle or falcon), has a colorful presence of its own. Pseudo-glyph panels are painted on the neck, and the body is extensively decorated all around with patterns in shades of brown-orange, brown, cream and black. This spectacular vase measures 10" high, 9" wide and is in excellent ancient intact condition with no repairs or restorations. There is a chip to the tip of the beak and natural surface abrasions due to age and wear. PROVENANCE: This spectacular item comes directly from a Southern California estate and was legally imported into the United States prior to 1970. Authenticity is GUARANTEED.
